We all remember the nursery rhymes that we used to sing all day long when we were in school. From “Ba Ba Black Sheep” to “Humpty Dumpty” all the rhymes and poems were fun to learn. Some people believe that a poem or a nursery rhyme is the best way to understand children and know more about them. So these days nurseries and children’s day centers have made it sure that learning a nursery rhyme is still as exciting as it used to be before for children. To make things a bit more fun while learning, one needs to be creative and ready to think out of the box.
There are several steps that can be implemented while teaching nursery rhymes and poems like the teacher could create an environment depicting the scenario as shown in the poem books. Also the teacher could ask the kids to play a certain character as in the poems. It is the work of the children’s nurseries to make sure that the learning is more exciting and fun rather than being boring.
Another fun thing to do could be making paper characters or dolls that can be used as a toy for the kids. Things that you will require for this purpose are glue, scissors and lots of paper. You could create Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf or you could make something more conventional, something that the kids are more familiar with, like Dora. You can also plan treasure hunts just like in the show Dora the Explorer. This could be a very good way of teaching the kids at the nursery. Depending on the type of nursery you run, you could also set up a small show based on nursery rhymes for the kids in which they could participate.
One more fun activity to learn poems and rhymes is the card game. You could create a stack of cards containing photos of various characters that we know from the poems and rhymes. These cards can be used by the teacher to make the kids recognize which poem does the character belong. The teacher could also divide the class in two teams and play this game. The team scoring the highest points would be considered as the winner. There is just one rule to this game that once the character is recognized, everyone has to sing recite the poem once in order to score a point. This game can also be played with music. Instead of cards you can ask the children to recognize the music being played and then sing along the poem that they recognized.
There are several fun activities available on the internet that provide amazing ideas to make learning more fun. All you need to do is search for it or else you could try being creative and think out of the box.
